Fetishism is the superstitious worship of fetishes, amulets and talismans. A fetish is an energetic object believed to give strength and health, protection and help in all kinds of emergencies. Fetishism is the worship of these supposed symbols of power and protection.

An amulet is an object charged with power for ( alleged ) protection against magical or demonic dangers. Amulets and talismans can be any object or part of the organic or inorganic world to which people attribute a charge of power.

The effect of fetishes, amulets and talismans is enhanced by inscriptions, especially the magic word. The fact that this cult has its roots in pagan magic is important for assessing fetishism today.

Fetishism is not only a phenomenon of antiquity, but also of modern superstition. The worship of hair, feathers, nails, horns, claws, teeth, spiders, scarabs, pigs, laurel, garlic, stems, threads, cords, tassels, ribbons, flint, spearheads, etc. In antiquity and among primitive peoples, the same idolisation of four-leaf clovers, lucky pennies, lucky mushrooms, lucky pigs, horseshoes, letters of good luck, amulets, relics, Easter water, mascots, chimney sweeps as symbols of good luck, as well as the fear of owls, ravens, spiders, black cats, old women, the stopping of the clock, the number 13 and the like as messengers of bad luck, has its parallel.
